Broderie anglaise dress: what the fabric is and why it’s perfect for summer
What broderie anglaise is, how it differs from lace, why it’s the best summer fabric for children and how to wash it.

A white dress with delicate eyelet embroidery is a picture almost all of us remember from childhood. The fabric is called broderie anglaise, and it’s back in fashion.
What is broderie anglaise?
Broderie anglaise is a cotton (sometimes linen) fabric with eyelet embroidery: a pattern is embroidered onto the cloth and small holes are cut inside the motifs.
Unlike lace, it has a strong woven base, so it doesn’t tear or snag easily — very important for children’s clothing.
Why it’s perfect for a child’s dress
- Breathable — natural cotton plus eyelets keeps children cool.
- Hypoallergenic — gentle on sensitive skin.
- No static, doesn’t cling.
- Effortlessly festive — no need for sequins or tulle.
- Practical — machine washable.
Where to wear it
Graduations, christenings, weddings, meadow photo shoots, summer city walks — and with sneakers or sandals it becomes everyday wear. The white “Liza” dress with puff sleeves suits special occasions, while the loose “Arina” works for both parties and every day.
How to wash broderie anglaise
- Delicate cycle, 30°C, liquid detergent for whites without bleach.
- Use a laundry bag and wash separately from colours.
- Dry flat, out of direct sun.
- Iron inside out on a towel to keep the embroidery raised.
Treat grass or ice-cream stains immediately in cool water — hot water sets protein stains.
Choosing the size
These dresses are loose-fitting, so choose by height and go up if in doubt. See our kids’ size guide.
